How long does C Section Recovery take?
Typically, it takes 6 weeks to recover. You will feel better within 2 weeks but your wound will take another 4 weeks to heal.

How painful is recovery?
It will be very painful without medication. You can expect to be very sore for several days, upto 2 weeks. Standing straight will be very difficult. And you will feel a burning or a pulling sensation when standing or walking around.

How can I prevent more pain?
Avoid coughing, sneezing, or laughing as it will make it very painful. When you get up from lying down or sitting, it will also be painful but you have to do it. By wearing an abdominal binder or postpartum belt, it will help with these movements.

Why do I have swollen feet?
During surgery, alot of fluids were given through IV. As a result, there will be excess fluids in your body and it will make your feet swell up. Keep your feet highly elevated while resting. And drink lots of water. It will take time for the fluids to eliminate.

How can I cope with the stairs?
It is not recommended to climb up stairs. Consider moving your sleeping quarters to the common area for a week or two. However, if you need to climb the stairs, do it very slowly and hold onto the handles.

How do I look after my wound and protect it?
You must keep your wound clean and sterilised. Also keep it dry to avoid infection. If your wound looks red or pussy, or has a foul smell lingering, see your doctor immediately.

What can I lift?
You are not allowed to lift anything heavier than your baby, or you risk tearing your incision.

Can I exercise?
There are 2 exercises that are safe and effective. Pelvic Tilts and Walking.
Perform pelvic tilt exercises by lying on your bed and pressing your back towards the bed. Hold 5-10 secs. And repeat. This help strengthen your tummy muscles.
Walking as often as possible is also highly recommended.

What mistakes do mothers make during recovery?
Quite commonly, as soon as a mother ‘feels better’, she has this energy burst and starts cleaning and tidying up. But that may trigger pain to return again. And this may lead to infection. It is important not to the things that turn and twist your body as it pulls your incision and leaves scar tissue.

When can I drive again?
After 2-3 weeks

How do I copy with my active preschooler?
From a young age, a child can understand that your tummy is very sore and cannot move much. You cannot pick them up. So encourage your little one to cuddle together. You can warm your child up to the newcomer by giving him/her a gift from the baby. Your child will be overjoyed.

What can I eat during recovery?
The best foods are fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Also lean red meat, chicken, fish, soy, beans and eggs.

How can I recover faster?
If you want a faster C Section recovery with less pain, you need to support yourself with an abdominal binder or postpartum belt. By wearing this, there is less chance of tearing and scar tissue. Hence your wound will heal quicker, providing you are walking regularly and eating healthy foods.
